Next Friday marks the centenary of the murder of Fr. Michael Griffin, a native of Gurteen. A series of online events have been arranged to commemorate Fr. Griffin in his native Gurteen, in the Parish of Rahoon where he served, and in Barna where his remains were found aswell as a radio documentary by a native of our parish, Sally Ann Barrett, on Galway Bay FM.

2pm. Centenary Anniversary Mass of Funeral of Fr Michael Griffin from the St Joseph’s Church, Presentation Rd where Fr Griffin’s Funeral took place on November 23 rd 1920. Prior to his funeral, Fr Griffin was laid out on the sacristy table which is still in place within the Church.
The Mass will be led by Bishop Brendan Kelly, Bishop of Galway, following the mass, there will be the Unveiling of Commemorative Plaque at St Joseph’s Church, Presentation Rd. The Monument in Clochscoilte, Bearna has recently been renovated to mark the occasion of the Centenary of Fr Griffin’s Death. People within the 5KM are invited to pay a private visit to the Monument over the course of the week.
